Tree of the Month: Deodar Cedar

In this month’s Tree of the Month blog, we discuss the Deodar Cedar. Native to areas such as Afghanistan, India, and Pakistan, this is a beautiful, low maintenance specimen tree.

Botanical Name: Cedrus deodara

Characteristics: The Deodar Cedar is a large growing deciduous tree, reaching up to 60 feet tall and 40 feet wide. This tree grows in a pyramidal shape with silvery-green, fine needles and reddish-brown pinecones. The branches add interest with elegantly drooping branchlets. Deodar is a Sanskrit word, meaning “divine wood”, well-describing its graceful structure.

Hardiness Zone: Zones 7-9

Requirements: Since this tree is such a large species, be sure it has enough room to grow. The Deodar Cedar prefers full sun. Once established, they are heat and drought tolerant, and would benefit to have protection from harsh, cold winds.

Pest Susceptibility: The Deodar Cedar is a relatively pest and disease resistant species. Tip blight and root rot are possibilities.

If you have plenty of room for one of these beautiful trees, we highly recommend the Deodar Cedar as an addition to your landscape.
