The Serbian Spruce has been considered “one of the most graceful and beautiful spruces”. This month we will be highlighting this tree and all its characteristics.
Botanical Name: Picea omorika
Characteristics: This tree makes a great street tree, landscape specimen, and privacy screen. Growing up to 50-60 feet tall and 15-20 feet wide, this evergreen has a slender, upright growth pattern. These trees are extremely adaptable and tolerant of many urban conditions. The sweeping branches of this spruce have deep green foliage with a hint of blue, and additional interest in the dark purple color of the young pine cones. These are also a great species for Christmas trees.
Hardiness Zone: Zones 4-7
Requirements: The Serbian Spruce is a manageable species and very tolerant of air pollution. While they prefer full sun, they also do well in part shade conditions and prefer moist, well-drained soils.
Pest Susceptibility: While these trees are very tolerant and adaptable, some may be affected by needle cast and rust disease. They are also susceptible to spider mites, aphids, and scale.
