Tree of the Month – Serbian Spruce

The Serbian Spruce has been considered “one of the most graceful and beautiful spruces”. This month we will be highlighting this tree and all its characteristics.

Serbian SpruceBotanical Name: Picea omorika

Characteristics: This tree makes a great street tree, landscape specimen, and privacy screen. Growing up to 50-60 feet tall and 15-20 feet wide, this evergreen has a slender, upright growth pattern. These trees are extremely adaptable and tolerant of many urban conditions. The sweeping branches of this spruce have deep green foliage with a hint of blue, and additional interest in the dark purple color of the young pine cones. These are also a great species for Christmas trees.

 

 

Hardiness Zone: Zones 4-7

Serbian Cones

Requirements: The Serbian Spruce is a manageable species and very tolerant of air pollution. While they prefer full sun, they also do well in part shade conditions and prefer moist, well-drained soils.

Pest Susceptibility: While these trees are very tolerant and adaptable, some may be affected by needle cast and rust disease. They are also susceptible to spider mites, aphids, and scale.
