Tree of the Month: Green Giant Arborvitae

Botanical Name:Thuja standishii plicata

green giant arborvitae

Characteristics: The Green Giant Arborvitae is a large fast growing evergreen tree with dense dark green foliage that darkens or bronzes in the winter. Tuju comes from a Greek word for perfume. When the needles are squeezed they release a wonderful aroma. These evergreens provide nesting sites and cover for small animals and birds.

Green Giant Arborvitae are often used in a screen with several planted close together. They can withstand heavy ice and snow, making them a wonderful windbreak. Bright sun and extreme wind, however, can dry out the needles causing winter burn where one side will brown.

Hardiness Zone: 5-7
