Characteristics: The Dawn Redwood is a beautiful tree that grows in a cone shape to 100 ft. tall. It is related to and closely resembles the bald cypress and redwood trees. From fossil records, the Dawn Redwood tree is known to have existed as many as 50,000,000 years ago. This tree originates in Central and Southern China.

As this redwood tree matures, the trunk gets wider at the base and develops attractive and sometimes elaborate fluting. It features feathery, fern-like foliage that is soft to the touch. The foliage is light green in spring, matures to deep green in summer, and turns red-bronze in fall. The tree then loses its foliage and cones in late fall.

Hardiness Zone: 4-8

Requirements: The Dawn Redwood tree needs a large space in full sun with medium to high water requirements. It is generally considered low maintenance and drought resistant.

Pest Susceptibility: No serious insect or disease problems.
