Botanical Name: Fagus sylvatica ‘Atropunicea’
Characteristics: The Purple Beech tree is a large, low canopy tree that boasts beautiful dark purple foliage. At mature height, it reaches 50 feet tall with a round or oval well-spread canopy. Its dark purple color lasts through summer, then turns copper-red in fall. A perfect tree for a large space, this is an excellent shade tree for open lawns and parks. With its low canopy and large branches, it would make an excellent climbing tree for children.
This species is a forest tree native to central and Southern Europe. Its botanical name means, “belonging to woods and forests.”
Hardiness Zones: 4-7
Requirements: Best grown in deep, rich, moist – but well-drained – soils in full sun to part shade. Intolerant of wet, poorly drained soils. Considered a low maintenance tree overall with minimal pruning required.
Pest Susceptibility: No serious insect or disease problems. However, Beech scale is an occasional problem.
